When Léon Breitling established his own watchmaking workshop in Jura Valley of Switzerland in 1884, he was only 24 years old. Unlike other watch brands, Breitling declared its development direction at the beginning of establishment – develop and manufacture the chronographs and precision instruments. The antique fake Breitling “Vitesse” pocket watch was created at that time.
In 1914, after Léon died, his son Gaston Breitling inherited his father’s watchmaking business, bringing Breitling to a higher level. Till 1932, Gaston’s son Willie Breitling took charge of the company, opening up a new field for the brand – the aviation chronograph field.
At the beginning of the 20th century, pilots in the aviation industry needed chronograph instruments with stable performance and excellent quality. The Breitling chronograph pocket watches and subsequent chronographs had always been favored by aviation professionals especially senior Air Force officers. Relying on a keen market sense, Willie led the Breitling team to develop the first aviation “professional instrument”, an airborne device designed especially for the aircraft cockpit, meanwhile it was designated as the official supplier of the Royal Air Force.
Later, these flight timing devices took Breitling from Switzerland to Europe and then , to the world. In 1952, the headquarter of Breitling had been moved to Geneva and the brand’s most famous Navitimer was released in that year too. Although the development of Breitling after 21st century is stumbling, the automatic movement copy Breitling Navitimer has been still the most reliable partnership for the world’s aviation industry.
